Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a popular hair restoration cosmetic surgical procedure. It is one of the most advanced and effective cosmetic surgeries used today to help in correcting the receding hairline as well as excessive hair loss.
What is FUE all about?
This is a minimally invasive cosmetic surgical procedure which mainly involves ‘extracting’, meaning to ‘harvest’, hair follicular units from the donor area of the patient’s scalp and using the healthy and complete hair follicle units as transplants into the balding area. All this is done using highly-advanced and very precise surgical instruments and devices.
Although, this is a very effective hair transplant procedure, its success mainly depends on the experience of the cosmetic surgeon performing the operation as well as the type of surgical device used for it.
How is FUE performed?
Although FUE is performed using a variety of high-tech surgical instruments it follows a singular goal. All FUE procedures are aimed at carefully extracting healthy hair follicle units from the donor area of the scalp and implanting these follicle units with precision into the recipient area of the scalp.
In order to avoid pain or discomfort to the patient during the FUE hair transplant procedure, the surgeon will most likely administer local anesthesia to the scalp, in the donor area as well as the recipient area.
The extraction involves using advanced and accurate surgical instruments (even robotics at times) to make very small, circular incisions around the donor hair follicle units. These incisions precisely separate the hair follicles from the scalp tissue without damage to the structure or the root (follicle). This procedure is repeated with the same precision over and over again till the surgeon has sufficient healthy follicle units to be transplanted.
This is a very deliberate procedure and may take a couple of hours for the extraction process to be complete.
For the transplant segment of the surgery, the surgeon will again use advanced surgical instruments to make very small (1 mm) punch holes in the recipient area of the scalp. These punch holes are made in a pattern which follows the surrounding hair growth.
Using precise instruments, the surgeon will then carefully transplant one hair follicle unit in each of the punch holes in the recipient site.
How long does recovery take after a FUE Hair Transplant procedure?
As the FUE hair transplant procedure is a minimally invasive form of cosmetic hair restoration surgical procedure, the recovery time is comparatively less than the conventional hair transplant methods. Apart from this, the use of advanced surgical equipment’s for extraction and transplant of hair follicle units also makes this hair restoration technique comparatively painless and faster.
Most patients fail to notice the scars in the donor area and the recipient area of the scalp within 7-10 days after the surgery.
What are the results for FUE Hair Transplant procedure?
The FUE hair transplant procedure has the best success rates in similar hair restoration procedures. The effects can be normally seen more noticeably within the first few months.
Apart from this the recovery time, time spent in the hospital before and after surgery as well as the results is better than other hair transplant cosmetic surgical techniques.
